hitchcock

I welcome Rob back today with yet another review for our Alfred Hitchcock Blogathon! Let’s see if he lucked out with a better movie this time around!

waltzes from vienna

Why are all the Hitchcock movies I review from his early years so boring?

Waltzes From Vienna joins the likes of The Ring, The Farmer’s Daughter and Juno and Paycock as being some of the most boring movies I’ve had to sit thru.

This movie was extremely boring to me and the only element that I found somewhat interesting was the music.

This was Hitchcock’s only musical and he even admitted on a few occasions  that this was one of his worst films.  He supposedly only took the job because he had nothing else lined up for the year.  He claimed that the one thing that he was able to perfect from making this movie was the use of music in tense situations in movies.

The plot is once again a love triangle between the son of Johann Strauss (a composer tuned baker), a baker’s daughter and a countess.

The story revolves around the creation and first performance of the famed waltz theme – The Blue Danube (which as i stated earlier was nice to listen to and was the best part of this movie.

I hope to eventually get to some titles that are interesting and typical of what one could expect from Hitchcock, but this one was not one of them.

This is the only musical of his 53 films and if it was as boring for him to make this as it was for me to have to endure watching it, then I can say I’m quite glad he preferred thrillers. 🙂

That already counts against it, in my opinion. Not that I hate all musicals (LOVED Little Shop of Horrors, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, etc), but this looks terrible.
